Candidate Vetting for Blue-Collar Roles: What Employers Should Expect

Candidate vetting should answer one commercial question: why is this person likely to perform safely and reliably in this specific job? A CV alone rarely provides enough evidence for skilled trades, production, logistics, hospitality or site-based roles.

Translate the job into observable requirements

Break the role into tasks, tools, physical conditions, pace, tolerances, shift expectations and supervision level. This creates a consistent standard for interviews and practical checks.

For example, “welder” is too broad. Process, material, position, drawing interpretation, certification expectations and the actual production environment materially change the profile.

Use structured interviews, not intuition

Ask every candidate the same core questions and score answers against the same criteria. Request specific examples: what they produced, which equipment they used, how quality was checked and what they did when a problem occurred.

Consistency makes the shortlist easier to explain and reduces the influence of presentation style, language confidence or interviewer preference when those factors are not central to the work.

Check evidence at the right depth

The right evidence depends on risk. Identity, work history, references, licences, relevant certificates, practical demonstrations and previous work samples can all contribute, but they should be requested because they are relevant to the role.

A practical test should mirror the real task closely enough to be meaningful, use a clear scoring rubric and be conducted safely. Record both strengths and limitations so the employer receives a balanced view.

Make the shortlist transparent

Each profile should include a concise rationale: relevant experience, evidence reviewed, interview findings, skills observations, availability, mobility considerations and any point that still needs verification.

A smaller shortlist with clear reasons is more useful than a large batch of similar CVs. It saves operational managers time and creates a better foundation for final interviews.
